The Acoustic Typing Vector
By default, the iPhone plays a sharp, artificial clicking sound every single time you tap a letter on the virtual keyboard. While originally designed to simulate the tactile feedback of a physical Blackberry keyboard, this relentless clicking is highly disruptive in quiet environments, such as meetings, libraries, or while commuting on public transport. Relying solely on the physical mute switch to silence the keyboard is inefficient, as you may still want to hear incoming calls or notifications.
How to Disable Keyboard Clicks
You can instruct the iOS operating system to permanently mute the virtual keyboard independently of the master system volume.
1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
2. Scroll down and tap on Sounds & Haptics.
3. Scroll down to the bottom of this menu until you locate the System Haptics & Sounds section.
4. Find the setting labelled Keyboard Feedback and tap on it.
5. You will see two toggle switches: Sound and Haptic. Locate the toggle switch labelled Sound.
6. Tap the toggle to switch it to the Off position (the switch will turn grey).
Your iPhone keyboard will now type in absolute silence, regardless of whether your device’s physical ringer switch is set to loud or silent. You may choose to leave the “Haptic” toggle on if you still want to feel a subtle physical vibration when typing.
