How to Hide the Menu Bar Automatically on a Mac

The Display Estate Vector

The macOS Menu Bar is a persistent strip anchored to the absolute top of your display, housing your application menus, system clock, and status icons. While critical for navigation, it consumes a solid block of vertical pixels. If you are working on a smaller MacBook screen, editing complex video timelines, or simply want a distraction-free, fully immersive environment, that permanent strip of pixels can feel highly restrictive.

How to Hide the Menu Bar Automatically

You can configure macOS to seamlessly slide the Menu Bar off the screen when it is not actively in use, granting you true full-screen workspace.

1. Click the Apple Logo in the extreme top-left corner of the screen.
2. Select System Settings from the dropdown menu.
3. In the left-hand sidebar, scroll down and click on Control Centre.
4. Scroll down the main pane until you locate the section labelled Menu Bar Only.
5. Look for the dropdown menu titled Automatically hide and show the menu bar.
6. Click the dropdown menu and select Always (or “In Full Screen Only” if you prefer a hybrid approach).

The Menu Bar will immediately retract upwards out of sight. To access it, simply push your mouse cursor to the absolute top edge of your screen, and it will slide back down for interaction.
