The Post-Exercise Nag
The Apple Watch features an aggressive background tracking algorithm known as the “End Workout Reminder.” If you manually start a running or cycling workout but forget to tap “End” when you finish, the watch will eventually notice your heart rate stabilizing and your movement ceasing. It will then loudly vibrate and display a full-screen notification asking if you are finished. While occasionally helpful for absent-minded users, it is incredibly annoying if you are simply taking a five-minute water break during an intense interval training session, only to have your watch constantly demanding to terminate the tracking session. You must disable this automatic trigger.
How to Turn Off the End Workout Reminder
You can permanently sever the background deceleration daemon via the Workout settings.
- Open the Settings app directly on your Apple Watch (the grey gear icon).
- Scroll down the main list and tap on Workout.
- Scroll down to the section governing automatic tracking.
- Locate the master toggle switch labeled End Workout Reminder.
- Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).
Strict Manual Termination
The change is instantaneous. The Apple Watch will completely terminate the background machine learning daemon responsible for predicting when you have stopped exercising. The operating system will sever its connection to your resting heart rate metrics for the purpose of workout termination. You can now pause your run, sit on a bench for twenty minutes, and the watch will absolutely refuse to interrupt you or ask if you are finished. Workouts will only stop when you explicitly swipe right and tap the red “End” button, guaranteeing absolute manual control over your fitness data.
