How to Disable the “Listen for ‘Hey Siri'” Trigger on iPhone

The Always-On Microphone

By default, the iPhone utilizes a low-power co-processor to constantly monitor the ambient noise in your environment. It is perpetually listening for the specific vocal trigger “Hey Siri” (or just “Siri”). While designed to allow you to set timers without touching your phone, this means your microphone is technically always active, processing audio data in the background. Furthermore, a television commercial or a friend saying a similar word can frequently trigger Siri by accident, interrupting your workflow or broadcasting a loud response in a quiet room. You must sever this always-on listening daemon.

How to Turn Off the Siri Voice Trigger

You can permanently paralyze the background microphone monitoring via the Siri & Search settings.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down and tap on Siri & Search (or Apple Intelligence & Siri on newer devices).
  3. At the very top of the screen, tap on Listen for.
  4. Change the selection from “Siri or Hey Siri” directly to Off.

Physical Activation Only

The change takes effect instantly. The iPhone will completely terminate the background audio processing daemon. The operating system will instantly power down the always-on microphone array. You can now yell “Hey Siri” directly into the phone, and the operating system will absolutely refuse to wake the assistant. To use Siri, you are now strictly required to physically press and hold the side power button, guaranteeing absolute control over when your microphone is active and recording.
