The Nightstand Distraction
Apple includes a feature on the iPhone called “StandBy.” By default, if you connect your iPhone to a charger (either a MagSafe puck or a Lightning cable) and turn the device on its side in landscape orientation, the screen transforms into a massive, bright digital clock and widget hub. While intended to function as a bedside alarm clock, many users charge their phones while using them in bed or on a desk. Accidentally triggering a massive, full-screen widget overlay when you simply tilt your charging phone is incredibly frustrating. You must permanently disable this display mode.
How to Turn Off StandBy Mode
You can permanently paralyze the landscape charging interface via the StandBy settings.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Scroll down the main list and tap on StandBy.
- Locate the master toggle switch labeled StandBy at the very top of the screen.
- Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).
A Locked Charging Screen
The change takes effect instantly. The iPhone will completely terminate the background daemon responsible for cross-referencing your charging status with the internal gyroscope. You can now plug in your phone and physically rotate it into landscape mode on your desk or bed, and the operating system will absolutely refuse to hijack the display. Your Lock Screen will remain vertically oriented and function normally, guaranteeing that your phone acts like a phone, not a smart display.
