The Proximity Exploit
Apple includes a highly publicized feature in iOS called “NameDrop.” By default, if you bring the top of your iPhone physically close to the top of another person’s iPhone, both phones will vibrate aggressively and attempt to instantly swap contact posters, phone numbers, and email addresses. While marketed as a futuristic business card exchange, it is incredibly annoying and a massive privacy risk in crowded environments like subways or concerts, where phones frequently bump against each other in pockets or bags. You must disable this proximity trigger.
How to Turn Off NameDrop (Bringing Devices Together)
You can permanently sever the near-field communication (NFC) handshake via the AirDrop settings.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Scroll down and tap on General.
- Tap on AirDrop.
- Locate the section labeled “Start Sharing By.”
- Find the toggle switch labeled Bringing Devices Together.
- Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).
Secured Personal Data
The change takes effect instantly. The iPhone will completely terminate the background NFC daemon responsible for detecting the magnetic and spatial proximity of other Apple devices. You can now press your phone directly against a stranger’s iPhone, and the operating system will absolutely refuse to trigger the glowing NameDrop animation or attempt to transmit your contact poster. Standard AirDrop over Wi-Fi/Bluetooth will continue to function normally, but the automated physical proximity trigger is permanently destroyed.
