How to Disable the Respiratory Rate Sensor on Apple Watch

The Sleep Tracking Drain

When you wear your Apple Watch to bed to track your sleep, it does more than just monitor your movement. By default, the watch activates a background sensor algorithm designed to measure your “Respiratory Rate” (how many breaths you take per minute). It achieves this by heavily relying on the accelerometer to detect the microscopic rising and falling of your chest. While this provides detailed health metrics, maintaining this hypersensitive accelerometer polling throughout the entire night consumes significant battery power. If you only care about basic sleep duration, you must disable this sensor array.

How to Turn Off Respiratory Rate Tracking

You can permanently paralyze the background breathing algorithm via the Privacy settings.

  1. Open the Settings app directly on your Apple Watch (the grey gear icon).
  2. Scroll down the main list and tap on Privacy & Security.
  3. Tap on Health.
  4. Tap on Respiratory Rate.
  5. Locate the master toggle switch labeled Respiratory Rate.
  6. Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).

Basic Sleep Telemetry

The change is instantaneous. The Apple Watch will completely terminate the background daemon responsible for mathematically calculating chest expansion. Tonight, when the watch detects you are asleep, it will rely entirely on low-power, basic movement tracking to determine your sleep stages. It will absolutely refuse to calculate your breaths per minute. You have successfully streamlined the sleep tracking engine, ensuring that your watch uses the absolute minimum amount of battery power overnight.
