How to Disable Home Control on the iPhone Lock Screen

The Smart Home Vulnerability

If you use Apple’s HomeKit ecosystem, the iPhone automatically places a “Home Control” button directly in the Control Center and on the Lock Screen. This allows you to quickly adjust your thermostat, turn on lights, or unlock smart deadbolts. However, if your phone is stolen or left unattended on a desk, leaving these controls accessible from a locked screen is a massive physical security risk. A stranger could theoretically tap the screen to unlock your front door or open your garage without ever needing your Face ID or passcode. You must lock this interface.

How to Turn Off Home Control on the Lock Screen

You can permanently secure your smart home APIs via the Face ID settings.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down and tap on Face ID & Passcode (or Touch ID & Passcode).
  3. Enter your device’s master PIN code to access the secure menu.
  4. Scroll down to the section labeled “Allow Access When Locked.”
  5. Locate the toggle switch labeled Home Control.
  6. Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).

Secured Physical Infrastructure

The change takes effect instantly. The iPhone will completely sever the HomeKit API while the device is locked. If someone taps the Home icon on your Lock Screen, the operating system will absolutely refuse to transmit any commands to your smart home hub. The screen will immediately prompt for biometric authentication. To unlock your smart deadbolt or open the garage, you are now strictly required to authenticate your identity first, guaranteeing the physical security of your house.
