The Accidental Illumination
The Apple Watch features a setting known as “Wake on Crown Turn.” By default, if the watch screen is completely off, slowly rotating the Digital Crown upwards will cause the OLED display to gradually brighten, allowing you to peek at the time in a dark room. However, because the crown protrudes from the side of the watch, it frequently brushes against the sleeve of a jacket, the edge of a desk, or the back of your hand. This constantly wakes the screen up by accident, draining massive amounts of battery throughout the day. You must sever this mechanical trigger.
How to Turn Off Wake on Crown Turn
You can permanently paralyze the rotational wake trigger via the Display & Brightness settings.
- Open the Settings app directly on your Apple Watch (the grey gear icon).
- Scroll down the main list and tap on Display & Brightness.
- Scroll down to the “Wake” section.
- Locate the toggle switch labeled Wake on Crown Turn.
- Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).
A Sleep-State Lock
The change is instantaneous. The Apple Watch will completely terminate the background daemon responsible for monitoring the rotational axis of the crown while the screen is asleep. You can now brush the Digital Crown against your clothing, or actively spin it as fast as you want while the screen is black, and the watch will absolutely refuse to turn on the display. To wake the watch, you are now strictly required to either tap the glass or explicitly press the button inward, guaranteeing absolute control over your battery consumption.
