The Accidental Eraser
iOS features a long-standing physical shortcut called “Shake to Undo.” If you are typing a long text message or an email, and you physically shake the iPhone back and forth, a pop-up appears asking if you want to “Undo Typing.” If you accidentally hit confirm, everything you just typed is instantly deleted. If you type while walking, jogging, or riding in a bumpy car, the accelerometer will constantly trigger this pop-up by mistake, completely interrupting your workflow and risking the loss of your text. You must permanently paralyze this hardware shortcut.
How to Turn Off Shake to Undo
You can permanently sever the connection between the accelerometer and the text input engine via the Accessibility settings.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Scroll down and tap on Accessibility.
- Under the “Physical and Motor” section, tap on Touch.
- Scroll down the list until you find the toggle switch labeled Shake to Undo.
- Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).
Secure Text Input
The change takes effect instantly. The iPhone will completely terminate the background daemon responsible for monitoring your physical motion while the keyboard is active. You can now violently shake your phone while drafting a long email, and the operating system will completely ignore the movement. The prompt will never appear, guaranteeing that your text remains exactly where it is until you explicitly press the backspace key on the digital keyboard.
