How to Completely Remove the Passcode Requirement on Apple Watch

The Constant Interruption

By default, the Apple Watch requires you to enter a 4-digit or 6-digit numeric passcode every time you take the watch off your wrist and put it back on. While this is a critical security feature (and is strictly required if you use Apple Pay on the watch), typing a PIN code on a tiny 40mm screen is a frustrating, error-prone experience. If you do not use Apple Pay, do not store sensitive medical data on the watch, and strictly use it as a basic pedometer and timepiece, you can completely remove the security barrier.

How to Turn Off the Passcode Requirement

You can permanently strip the PIN lock from the operating system via the Settings app on the watch itself.

  1. Open the Settings app directly on your Apple Watch (the grey gear icon).
  2. Scroll down the main list and tap on Passcode.
  3. Tap on the large button labeled Turn Passcode Off.
  4. The watch will prompt you to enter your current passcode one final time to verify your identity.
  5. Type your current PIN code.

Absolute Convenience vs. Security

The change is instantaneous. The Apple Watch will completely delete your PIN code from its internal Secure Enclave. Warning: The moment you do this, watchOS will permanently disable Apple Pay and instantly delete all your stored credit cards from the watch. However, from this point forward, you can take the watch off, throw it on a desk, and strap it back onto your wrist hours later, and it will instantly turn on without ever asking for a password again, guaranteeing zero friction when wearing the device.
