How to Disable Activity History Privacy Tracking in Windows 11

The Cross-Device Surveillance

Windows 11 includes a highly invasive telemetry feature known as “Activity History.” When enabled, the operating system meticulously records exactly which applications you open, the specific documents you edit, and the websites you visit. Microsoft then uploads this comprehensive behavioral timeline directly to its cloud servers. The stated goal is to allow you to “pick up where you left off” if you log into a different Windows PC. However, if you only own one computer, or simply refuse to allow Microsoft to build an exhaustive, permanent cloud database of every single action you take on your local hard drive, you must destroy this feature.

How to Turn Off Activity History

You can permanently sever the telemetry upload stream via the Privacy settings.

  1. Click the Start Menu and type Settings, or press the Windows Key + I.
  2. In the left-hand sidebar, click on Privacy & security.
  3. In the main window, under the “Windows permissions” section, click on Activity history.
  4. Locate the master toggle switch labeled “Store my activity history on this device.”
  5. Toggle this switch to the Off position.
  6. Immediately below that setting, click the button labeled Clear to purge the data Microsoft has already collected.

Local Privacy Restored

The change takes effect instantly. Windows 11 will completely terminate the background surveillance daemon. The operating system will instantly stop recording your application usage and will physically cut the network connection responsible for uploading your timeline to the cloud. Your interactions with your local software and files will remain strictly on your physical hard drive, completely invisible to Microsoft.
