The Hourly Interruption
The Apple Watch contains a legacy feature called “Chimes,” designed to mimic the behavior of old digital watches. When enabled, the watch will emit a short sound—usually a digital bird chirp or a subtle bell ring—precisely at the top of every hour. While some users enjoy the auditory reminder of passing time, having a speaker randomly chirp during a silent meeting, a movie theater, or a focused work session is highly disruptive. If you demand that your watch only makes noise when a human being actually contacts you, you must permanently silence the hourly Chimes.
How to Turn Off Chimes
You can permanently sever the hourly audio trigger via the Accessibility settings.
- Open the Settings app directly on your Apple Watch (the grey gear icon).
- Scroll down the main list and tap on Accessibility.
- Scroll down to the section labeled “Vision” and tap on Chimes.
- Locate the master toggle switch labeled Chimes at the top of the screen.
- Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).
A Silent Schedule
The change is instantaneous. The Apple Watch will completely terminate the background scheduling daemon responsible for tracking the top of the hour. The next time the clock strikes exactly 12:00 or 1:00, your watch will remain completely, utterly silent. It will never again emit bird noises or bell sounds, ensuring your wearable remains a strictly on-demand communication device.
