The Green Laser
The Apple Watch’s primary selling point is its advanced health tracking, powered by an optical heart sensor. This sensor periodically fires bright green LED lights into your wrist throughout the day to calculate your resting heart rate and estimate your calorie burn. While lifesaving for many, it presents two major issues: it heavily drains the battery, and the bright green flashing light can be highly distracting in dark environments like movie theaters or while trying to sleep. If you only use your Apple Watch for notifications, timekeeping, and alarms, you can completely disable the medical hardware to maximize battery life.
How to Turn Off the Heart Rate Sensor
You can permanently disconnect the watch from its optical biometric sensors via the Privacy settings.
- Open the Settings app directly on your Apple Watch (the grey gear icon).
- Scroll down the main list and tap on Privacy & Security.
- Tap on Health.
- Tap on Heart Rate.
- Locate the master toggle switch labeled Heart Rate.
- Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).
Zero Biometrics
The change takes effect instantly. The Apple Watch will completely cut power to the green LED array on the back of the device. The watch will instantly stop tracking your resting heart rate, your workout intensity, and your daily calorie burn. It will essentially transform from an advanced medical tracker into a highly efficient, standard smartwatch, allowing you to easily stretch your battery life across multiple days.
