How to Disable Reachability on iPhone

The Accidental Swipe

Because modern iPhones have massive screens, Apple includes an accessibility feature called “Reachability.” When activated, the entire user interface violently slides down the screen, leaving the top half completely black, allowing you to reach top-row icons with your thumb. On phones with a Home Button, this is triggered by quickly double-tapping the button. On newer phones, it is triggered by swiping down on the extreme bottom edge of the screen. Unfortunately, if you type quickly on the keyboard or attempt to swipe between apps, you will constantly trigger this feature by accident. You must permanently lock the screen in place.

How to Turn Off Reachability

You can permanently disable the screen-sliding gesture via the Accessibility settings.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down and tap on Accessibility.
  3. Under the “Physical and Motor” section, tap on Touch.
  4. Locate the master toggle switch labeled Reachability.
  5. Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).

A Locked Interface

The change takes effect instantly. The iPhone will completely terminate the background listener monitoring the bottom edge of your screen. Now, no matter how aggressively you swipe at the bottom of your phone or double-tap the home button, the user interface will remain firmly locked to the top of the display. This completely eliminates the jarring, accidental screen shifts while typing or gaming.
