The Battery Drain
The Apple Watch is designed to feel instantly responsive. To achieve this, it utilizes a system called “Background App Refresh.” By default, almost every application installed on your watch is allowed to secretly connect to the internet in the background, download fresh data (like weather forecasts or stock prices), and pre-render its user interface. This ensures the app is ready the exact second you tap its icon. However, on a device with a battery as tiny as the Apple Watch, having dozens of apps constantly pinging the internet throughout the day is the primary cause of severe battery drain. For maximum longevity, you must shut down this background process.
How to Turn Off Background App Refresh Globally
You can throw a master kill switch to permanently sever the background data pipeline via the General settings.
- Open the Settings app directly on your Apple Watch (the grey gear icon).
- Scroll down the main list and tap on General.
- Scroll down and tap on Background App Refresh.
- Locate the master toggle switch labeled Background App Refresh at the absolute top of the screen.
- Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).
On-Demand Loading
The change is instantaneous. The Apple Watch will completely terminate the background execution permissions for every single installed application. Your apps will still function perfectly, but they are now forced into an “on-demand” model. When you tap the Weather app, it will take an extra 1.5 seconds to pull down the latest forecast, because it is no longer allowed to fetch that data secretly while your screen is turned off. This slight delay translates to significantly better battery life throughout the day.
