How to Disable the Xbox Game Bar in Windows 11

The Unnecessary Overlay

Windows 11 includes a built-in gaming interface called the “Xbox Game Bar.” Designed to help you record gameplay footage, chat with friends, and monitor CPU usage, this massive software overlay aggressively runs in the background at all times. It is hardcoded to instantly launch whenever you press the Windows Key + G shortcut, or if you press the central guide button on a connected Xbox controller. If you use a dedicated recording software like OBS Studio, or if you simply do not play video games on your computer, the Game Bar is a redundant resource drain that frequently pops up by accident. You must completely disable the overlay.

How to Turn Off the Xbox Game Bar

You can permanently sever the shortcut and disable the overlay via the Gaming settings.

  1. Click the Start Menu and type Settings, or press the Windows Key + I.
  2. In the left-hand sidebar, click on Gaming.
  3. In the main window, click on Xbox Game Bar.
  4. Locate the master toggle switch labeled “Open Xbox Game Bar using this button on a controller.”
  5. Toggle this switch to the Off position.

A Clean Desktop

The change takes effect instantly. Windows 11 will completely terminate the background listening service for the Game Bar. You can now press the Windows Key + G or mash the center button on your game controller as much as you want; the massive Xbox overlay will remain completely dormant, freeing up system resources and ensuring an uninterrupted desktop experience.
