The Phantom Keyboard
Windows 11 is designed as a hybrid operating system, capable of running on traditional desktop towers as well as touchscreen tablets (like the Microsoft Surface). Because of this, Windows aggressively monitors your hardware. If it detects a touchscreen monitor, or if you simply have certain tablet-oriented settings enabled, it will permanently pin a small “Touch Keyboard” icon to the bottom right corner of your taskbar, next to the system clock. If you are using a standard desktop computer with a physical mechanical keyboard and a standard mouse, this icon is completely useless and just clutters your system tray. You must force Windows to hide it.
How to Hide the Touch Keyboard Icon
You can permanently remove the virtual keyboard shortcut via the Taskbar settings.
- Click the Start Menu and type Settings, or press the Windows Key + I.
- In the left-hand sidebar, click on Personalization.
- In the main window, scroll down and click on Taskbar.
- Look for the section labeled “System tray icons.”
- Locate the dropdown menu next to Touch keyboard.
- Click the dropdown and change the setting from “When no keyboard attached” to Never.
A Dedicated Desktop
The change takes effect instantly. Windows 11 will immediately delete the virtual keyboard icon from your taskbar. This does not uninstall the touch keyboard software (you can still trigger it manually if needed), but it guarantees that the shortcut will never randomly appear in your system tray, restoring a cleaner, desktop-focused interface.
