How to Hide the Bookmarks Bar in Google Chrome

The Screen Clutter

Google Chrome features a dedicated Bookmarks Bar that sits horizontally directly below the URL address bar. By default, if you press Ctrl+Shift+B (or Cmd+Shift+B on Mac), this bar becomes permanently glued to your browser window. While this provides rapid access to your favorite websites, it permanently consumes a significant strip of vertical screen real estate. On smaller laptops, like 13-inch MacBooks or Chromebooks, every pixel of vertical space is critical for reading long web pages or viewing large spreadsheets. If you prefer a minimalist interface and rely on keyboard shortcuts or the new tab page to navigate, you must hide the permanent bar.

How to Hide the Bookmarks Bar

You can instantly reclaim your vertical screen space via the Appearance settings.

  1. Open the Google Chrome desktop browser.
  2. Click the three vertical dots (â‹®) in the top right corner and select Settings.
  3. In the left-hand sidebar, click on Appearance.
  4. Look for the toggle switch labeled Show bookmarks bar.
  5. Toggle this switch to the Off position (the grey position).

A Minimalist Browser

The change is instantaneous. The grey strip containing your saved links will immediately collapse and vanish from the top of the browser, instantly expanding your viewing area. Your bookmarks are not deleted; they remain perfectly safe and accessible by clicking the three vertical dots and navigating to the “Bookmarks” submenu, or by opening a New Tab page, where the bar will temporarily appear just for that specific screen.
