How to Disable Mouse Trails in Windows 11

The Ghost Cursor

Windows 11 includes a legacy accessibility feature known as “Mouse Trails.” Originally designed for extremely slow, low-refresh-rate LCD monitors in the 1990s, this feature generates a visual echo of your mouse cursor as you move it across the screen, making the pointer easier to track. However, on modern, high-refresh-rate gaming monitors or standard office displays, mouse trails simply make the operating system look broken, lagging, and incredibly distracting. If this feature was accidentally enabled, you must dig into the legacy control panel to disable it.

How to Turn Off Mouse Trails

You can permanently remove the cursor echoes via the advanced mouse settings.

  1. Click the Start Menu and type Settings, or press the Windows Key + I.
  2. In the left-hand sidebar, click on Bluetooth & devices.
  3. In the main window, click on Mouse.
  4. Scroll down to the “Related settings” section and click on Additional mouse settings. This will open the legacy Windows Mouse Properties window.
  5. At the top of this new window, click the Pointer Options tab.
  6. In the “Visibility” section, locate the checkbox labeled “Display pointer trails.”
  7. Click the checkbox to completely remove the checkmark.
  8. Click Apply, then click OK.

A Crisp Pointer

The change takes effect the exact second you click Apply. The visual echoes will instantly vanish. Your mouse cursor will return to being a single, sharp icon that moves seamlessly across the screen with zero artificial lag or ghosting, fully utilizing the refresh rate of your modern monitor.
