How to Disable Device Setup Suggestions in Windows 11

The Recurring Setup Nag

Microsoft aggressively pushes users to adopt its entire ecosystem of software and services. In Windows 11, the operating system occasionally locks your screen after a reboot or an update and forces you into a full-screen “Welcome experience.” This interface actively tries to convince you to link your mobile phone to Windows, subscribe to Microsoft 365, configure OneDrive backups, or change your default browser to Microsoft Edge. If you have already configured your PC exactly the way you want it and have zero interest in adopting Microsoft’s additional services, these recurring full-screen advertisements are incredibly frustrating. You must disable the setup suggestions.

How to Turn Off Device Setup Suggestions

You can permanently block the full-screen nag screen via the Notifications settings.

  1. Click the Start Menu and type Settings, or press the Windows Key + I.
  2. In the left-hand sidebar, click on System.
  3. In the main window, click on Notifications.
  4. Scroll all the way down to the absolute bottom of the Notifications page.
  5. Click on Additional settings to expand the hidden menu.
  6. Locate the checkbox labeled “Suggest ways to get the most out of Windows and finish setting up this device.”
  7. Click the checkbox to completely remove the checkmark.

A Quiet Reboot

The change is instantaneous. Windows 11 will permanently flag your user profile as completely configured. The next time you reboot your computer or install a major feature update, the operating system will boot directly to your desktop. You will never again be hijacked by a full-screen Microsoft marketing prompt demanding that you sign up for subscriptions or change your default software.
