How to Disable Fitness Tracking on Apple Watch

The Constant Pedometer

The Apple Watch is heavily marketed as a premier fitness device. By default, the watch constantly utilizes its internal accelerometer, gyroscope, and heart rate sensor to track every single step you take, estimate your daily caloric burn, and monitor your standing hours. While this data is highly valuable for athletes, not everyone wants to be quantified. If you simply wear the Apple Watch for its aesthetic design, to receive text messages, and to check the time, the constant background fitness tracking is actively wasting your battery life. You must instruct the watch to completely shut down its health sensors.

How to Turn Off Fitness Tracking

You can permanently sever the connection to the physical sensors via the Privacy settings.

  1. Open the Settings app directly on your Apple Watch (the grey gear icon).
  2. Scroll down the main list and tap on Privacy & Security.
  3. Tap on Fitness Tracking.
  4. Look for the master toggle switch labeled Fitness Tracking.
  5. Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).

A Smartwatch, Not a Tracker

The change takes effect instantly. The Apple Watch will immediately power down the background algorithms responsible for counting your steps and estimating your calorie burn. Your Activity Rings will completely flatline and stop progressing. However, the core smartwatch features—such as receiving notifications, making phone calls, and running third-party apps—will continue to function perfectly, and your daily battery life will see a noticeable improvement due to the reduced sensor load.
