How to Disable “Hover to Show Recent Searches” in Windows 11

The Accidental Pop-Up

In Windows 11, the Search icon on the taskbar has a highly aggressive behavior attached to it by default. If your mouse cursor accidentally hovers over the magnifying glass icon for even half a second while you are moving toward another application, Windows violently launches a massive pop-up menu displaying your “Recent Searches” and trending web news. If you are a professional trying to navigate quickly between open windows, this accidental trigger is incredibly disruptive. You can instruct the operating system to only launch the search menu when you explicitly click on it.

How to Turn Off Search Hover

You can disable the hover trigger while keeping the search icon via the Taskbar settings.

  1. Click the Start Menu and type Settings, or press the Windows Key + I.
  2. In the left-hand sidebar, click on Personalization.
  3. In the main window, scroll down and click on Taskbar.
  4. Click the Taskbar behaviors section to expand the advanced menu.
  5. Look down the list for the specific checkbox labeled “Show recent searches when I hover over the search icon.”
  6. Click the checkbox to completely remove the checkmark.

Intentional Clicks Only

The change takes effect instantly. You can immediately drag your mouse cursor directly across the magnifying glass icon on your taskbar as slowly as you want. The operating system will completely ignore the hover event, and the massive recent searches menu will remain hidden. The search function is still fully active; however, you must now intentionally left-click the icon to launch the menu, eliminating all accidental interruptions.
