The Massive Previews
If you keep dozens of tabs open in Google Chrome, the text on the tabs eventually disappears, leaving only the tiny website icons (favicons). To help you identify the tabs, Chrome utilizes a feature called “Tab Hover Cards.” By default, if you rest your mouse cursor over a tab for even a second, a massive box pops up displaying a thumbnail image preview of the website and the full title of the page. While this is helpful for finding a specific Google Doc, the massive image previews are incredibly distracting, take up a huge amount of screen space, and frequently block the actual webpage you are trying to read. You must revert to the classic, simple text tooltips.
How to Turn Off Tab Hover Card Images
You can disable the image preview generation by altering a hidden browser flag.
- Open the Google Chrome desktop browser.
- Click inside the main address bar, type exactly
chrome://flags, and press Enter. - At the top of the Experiments page, you will see a search box. Type Tab Hover Card Images.
- The specific flag will appear highlighted in yellow.
- Click the dropdown menu next to it (it likely says “Default”) and change it to Disabled.
- A large blue Relaunch button will appear at the bottom of the screen. Click it to restart the browser.
Classic Text Tooltips
When Chrome reopens, the massive image previews are permanently gone. The next time you hover your mouse over a tab, Chrome will simply display a tiny, clean text box showing only the title of the page and the URL. This minimal approach allows you to identify your tabs without a massive thumbnail blocking your view.
