How to Disable Compass Calibration on Apple Watch

The Background Battery Drain

Modern Apple Watches include a built-in magnetometer (a digital compass). To ensure this compass is always pointing perfectly North, the watch runs a background service called “Compass Calibration.” This service constantly polls the watch’s internal GPS chip to verify its location and magnetic heading, even when you aren’t actively using the Compass app or navigating with Apple Maps. This constant GPS polling silently drains your battery. If you exclusively use your watch in a familiar office or gym and rarely rely on it for intense wilderness navigation, you can completely shut down this background calibration process.

How to Turn Off Compass Calibration

You can cut power to the background GPS polling via the privacy settings.

  1. Open the Settings app directly on your Apple Watch (the grey gear icon).
  2. Scroll down the main list and tap on Privacy & Security.
  3. Tap on Location Services.
  4. Scroll all the way down to the absolute bottom of the list and tap on System Services.
  5. Look for the toggle switch labeled Compass Calibration.
  6. Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).

Conserving Power

The change takes effect immediately. The Apple Watch will instantly stop polling the GPS hardware to calibrate its internal magnetometer. While the Compass app might take an extra second or two to find True North the next time you open it, your watch will consume significantly less battery power throughout a normal workday.
