The Missing App Phenomenon
In recent versions of iOS, Apple introduced the “App Library,” a hidden folder system located by swiping all the way to the right side of your home screen. When you download a brand-new application from the App Store, iOS often decides to completely bypass your home screen and quietly dump the new app directly into the App Library. If you aren’t paying close attention, it feels as though the app failed to download entirely, forcing you to frantically search through hidden folders just to launch a game you just purchased. If you prefer the classic iPhone experience where every single new download is prominently placed on your home screen, you must change the default download behavior.
How to Force Apps onto the Home Screen
You can override the App Library routing via the home screen settings.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Scroll down the main list and tap on Home Screen & App Library.
- Look at the very first section, labeled “Newly Downloaded Apps.”
- You will see two choices: “Add to Home Screen” and “App Library Only.”
- Tap Add to Home Screen so a blue checkmark appears next to it.
The Classic Experience Restored
The change is absolute. The next time you tap “Get” in the App Store, iOS will automatically create a brand-new icon on the last available page of your home screen. The App Library still exists, and you can still manually banish individual apps to it if you want to declutter your screen, but the operating system will no longer hide your newly purchased software from you by default.
