The Confusing Honeycomb Grid
When you press the Digital Crown on a brand-new Apple Watch, the operating system launches into the default “Grid View.” This displays every single installed application as a massive, floating cluster of circular icons resembling a honeycomb. While visually impressive in marketing materials, this layout is a usability nightmare. The tiny circular icons do not have text labels, meaning you must memorize exactly what the generic blue icon for a third-party weather app looks like. Furthermore, accidentally moving a single icon causes the entire honeycomb to aggressively rearrange itself. If you prefer to find your software quickly using standard alphabetical text, you must completely abandon the grid.
How to Change the App View to a List
You can force watchOS to display your applications in a traditional, easily readable vertical list.
- Wake up your Apple Watch screen.
- Press the Digital Crown (the circular dial on the side) once to open the current honeycomb app grid.
- Firmly press and hold your finger directly in the middle of the screen (on top of the floating icons). Do not tap; hold your finger down until a new menu pops up.
- Note: On newer versions of watchOS, simply scroll all the way to the absolute bottom of the honeycomb grid.
- You will see two distinct options: “Grid View” and “List View.”
- Tap on List View.
The Alphabetical Advantage
The honeycomb grid will instantly vanish, replaced by a clean, vertical list. Every single application is now locked into alphabetical order, featuring a large, readable text title perfectly aligned next to its icon. You can now use the Digital Crown to rapidly scroll from “Activity” down to “Weather” with absolute precision, completely eliminating the frustration of hunting for unlabeled circles.
