The Annoying Confirmation Dialogue
When you download a file in Google Chrome, you usually want it to instantly save to your default “Downloads” folder so you can get back to browsing. However, if your browser settings have been altered, Chrome might interrupt your workflow by throwing a massive “Save As” dialogue box onto the screen every single time you click a download link. It forces you to manually confirm the file name and manually select a destination folder before the download can even begin. If you download dozens of PDF files or images a day, this extra click is incredibly tedious. You can force Chrome to skip this prompt and download files silently in the background.
How to Turn Off the Download Location Prompt
You can revert Chrome to its default, silent downloading behavior via the main settings menu.
- Open the Google Chrome desktop browser.
- Click the three vertical dots (⋮) in the top right corner and select Settings.
- In the left-hand sidebar, click on Downloads.
- Look for the toggle switch labeled “Ask where to save each file before downloading.”
- Toggle this switch to the Off position.
Setting the Default Destination
Once you turn off the prompt, Chrome needs to know exactly where to put your files. On that exact same settings page, look directly above the toggle switch for the Location setting.
- Click the Change button next to the current file path.
- A folder browser will appear. Navigate to the exact folder where you want all future files to land (e.g., your Desktop, or a dedicated “Chrome Downloads” folder on a secondary hard drive).
- Click Select Folder.
From now on, whenever you click a download link, the file will instantly and silently save to that exact location without ever interrupting your screen with a pop-up box.
