How to Disable Read Receipts for Specific Contacts in iMessage

The Social Pressure of Read Receipts

In Apple’s iMessage ecosystem, “Read Receipts” are the small lines of grey text that appear beneath a message bubble, explicitly telling the sender exactly what time you opened their text. While many users disable this feature globally to maintain their privacy and avoid the social pressure of having to reply immediately, you might actually want to leave them on for your spouse or close family members for safety reasons. Fortunately, iOS does not force an all-or-nothing approach. You can leave your global Read Receipts turned off and manually enable them for specific people, or vice versa.

How to Manage Read Receipts Per Contact

You control this setting directly inside the individual conversation thread, not in the main iOS settings menu.

  1. Open the Messages app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap on the specific conversation thread for the person you want to manage.
  3. Look at the very top of the screen. Tap on the Contact’s Name or Profile Picture.
  4. This will open the details page for that specific relationship. Scroll down slightly.
  5. Locate the toggle switch labeled Send Read Receipts.
  6. Tap the switch to turn it Off (to hide when you read their messages) or On (to allow them to see the timestamp).
  7. Tap Done in the top right corner.

How the Hierarchy Works

This individual contact setting will always override your master system preferences. For example, if you go to Settings > Messages and turn “Send Read Receipts” globally OFF for the entire world, but follow the steps above to turn it ON for your mother, she will be the only person on the planet who receives read timestamps when texting you. The other person receives no notification that you have changed this setting; their timestamps will simply appear or disappear on their next message.
