How to Stop Apple Watch from Automatically Installing iPhone Apps

The Cluttered Watch Face

When you set up a new Apple Watch, a specific synchronization feature is enabled by default: Automatic App Install. Because of this setting, whenever you download a brand new application from the App Store onto your iPhone (such as a new airline app, a food delivery service, or a calculator), the system will automatically check if that app has a companion version designed for the Apple Watch. If it does, the iPhone will silently push the app to your wrist. While this seems convenient, it usually results in an Apple Watch home screen severely cluttered with dozens of tiny, useless icons for apps you will never actually use on a tiny screen. If you prefer to manually curate which apps earn a spot on your watch, you must disable this automated behavior.

How to Turn Off Automatic App Install

You manage this synchronization behavior using the dedicated Watch app on your paired iPhone.

  1. Open the Watch app on your iPhone.
  2. Ensure you are on the My Watch tab located at the bottom left of the screen.
  3. Scroll down slightly and tap on General.
  4. Look for the toggle switch labeled Automatic App Install.
  5. Tap the switch to turn it Off (the green background will disappear).

Managing Apps Manually

Disabling this setting will not delete the companion apps that have already been pushed to your watch. To clean up the existing clutter, you must return to the main “My Watch” screen and scroll all the way down to the “Installed on Apple Watch” list, tapping each app individually to remove it. From now on, when you download a new app on your iPhone, it will simply sit quietly in a list at the very bottom of the Watch app under the heading “Available Apps.” You can then manually tap the “Install” button next to it only if you genuinely want that specific tool on your wrist.
