How to Enable the “Show location of pointer” Feature in Windows 11

Why You Might Lose Your Cursor

If you use a multi-monitor setup, an ultra-wide display, or if you frequently give presentations using a projector, it is surprisingly easy to lose track of where your tiny mouse pointer is located on the screen. Wiggling the mouse aggressively is the standard solution, but Windows includes a brilliant, long-standing accessibility feature designed specifically to solve this problem. You can configure Windows to display a large, animated sonar ring that immediately pinpoints the exact location of your cursor whenever you press a specific key on your keyboard.

How to Enable the Pointer Location Feature

This setting has existed since the days of Windows XP and remains available in Windows 11, though it is still housed in the classic Control Panel interface rather than the modern Settings app.

  1. Click the Start Menu and type Mouse Settings. Press Enter to open the modern settings page.
  2. Scroll down to the “Related settings” section and click on Additional mouse settings. This action will open the classic “Mouse Properties” dialog box.
  3. In the Mouse Properties window, click on the Pointer Options tab at the top.
  4. Look at the very bottom of this tab for a section titled “Visibility.”
  5. Check the box next to the text that says: “Show location of pointer when I press the CTRL key.”
  6. Click the Apply button, and then click OK to close the window.

Testing the Feature

The feature is now active system-wide. To test it, move your mouse to a random location on your screen. Tap the CTRL (Control) key on your keyboard once. A large, grey circle will instantly appear and shrink down around the exact tip of your mouse cursor, creating a visual “ping” effect. You can trigger this animation at any time, in any application, making it an invaluable tool for visually impaired users, presenters, or anyone working across a vast expanse of digital screen real estate.
