The Disappearing Installers
By default, macOS relies heavily on Safari as its integrated web browser. To keep your hard drive clean and save space, Safari has an aggressive default file management policy. When you download a `.zip` file, a `.dmg` installer, or a `.pdf` document, Safari places it in your Downloads folder. However, depending on your settings, Safari might automatically delete the original downloaded file from the Downloads list—and sometimes move the file itself to the Trash—shortly after it determines the file has been successfully opened or extracted. This is incredibly frustrating if you need to keep that original `.dmg` installer for a secondary Mac or archive a `.zip` for backup purposes.
Modifying Safari’s Download Retention Policy
To stop macOS (specifically via Safari) from automatically clearing or deleting your completed downloads, you must adjust the browser’s general preferences.
Open the Safari browser on your Mac. Navigate to the top menu bar, click on the word Safari next to the Apple logo, and select Settings… (or press `Cmd + ,`). Ensure you are viewing the General tab, which is usually the first one open. Look towards the bottom of this window for a drop-down menu labeled Remove download list items:. By default, this is often set to “Upon successful download” or “After one day.” Click this drop-down menu and change the selection to Manually. This stops Safari from clearing its internal list. Additionally, to stop the physical deletion of archive files, look just below that setting. If you see a checkbox for “Open ‘safe’ files after downloading,” uncheck it. This prevents Safari from auto-extracting zips and subsequently trashing the original archive, leaving your raw downloaded files safely intact in the Downloads folder until you explicitly delete them.
