How to Stop macOS from Automatically Switching to AirPlay

The Unintended Broadcast

AirPlay is Apple’s seamless protocol for wirelessly streaming audio or video from your Mac to a compatible smart TV, Apple TV, or HomePod. While generally reliable, macOS can sometimes become overly aggressive in its attempts to connect. If you have an Apple TV in your living room and you wake your Mac from sleep in the same room, you might occasionally find that your Mac automatically attempts to mirror its display or switch its audio output to the AirPlay device without your explicit command. This can be jarring, especially if the TV is already in use by someone else or if you are in a quiet environment and your Mac’s audio suddenly blares from a distant speaker.

Disabling the AirPlay Receiver and Managing Connections

To prevent these unwanted connections and stop macOS from automatically switching to AirPlay for display mirroring or audio output, you need to manage your AirPlay settings within the Control Center and System Settings.

First, ensure you haven’t accidentally left a persistent connection active. Click the Control Center icon (the two toggle switches) in the top right corner of the menu bar. Click on Screen Mirroring. If an AirPlay device is highlighted, click it to disconnect. Next, to prevent your Mac from acting as an AirPlay receiver (which can sometimes cause confusion on the network), go to System Settings > General > AirDrop & Handoff. Scroll down to AirPlay Receiver and toggle the switch to the Off position. Finally, if your Mac constantly tries to route audio to a specific HomePod, go to System Settings > Sound > Output and ensure your Mac’s internal speakers (or your preferred wired headphones) are explicitly selected, rather than an AirPlay destination.
