The Disappearing Keypad
When using the Google Docs mobile application on an Android or iOS tablet or smartphone, managing screen real estate is a constant battle. The on-screen virtual keyboard takes up roughly half of your display. While Docs tries to be intelligent by automatically closing the keyboard when you scroll down to read a previous paragraph or tap outside the active text area, this behavior can be incredibly frustrating. If you are rapidly switching between reading a reference point slightly higher up in the document and typing new text, having the keyboard constantly vanish and reappear breaks your concentration and slows down your typing speed.
Managing Focus and Scroll Behavior
To maintain your typing flow and stop Google Docs from automatically closing the on-screen keyboard when you interact with other parts of the document, you must adapt how you navigate.
Unfortunately, Google Docs does not have a specific “lock keyboard open” toggle in its settings, as this behavior is largely controlled by the mobile operating system’s focus rules. However, you can prevent the auto-close trigger by changing how you move through the document. The keyboard closes because the text cursor loses focus. Instead of tapping the screen to scroll, use the physical volume buttons on your device to page up or down (if your device supports this accessibility feature), or carefully use a two-finger scroll gesture, ensuring you do not tap the background page area. As long as the blinking cursor remains active and focused on a line of text, the virtual keyboard will stay locked in the open position.
