The Instant Drive
Windows 11 includes built-in support for ISO and IMG disk image files. By default, if you double-click one of these files, Windows assumes you want to access the contents as if you had inserted a physical CD or DVD into a drive. It automatically “mounts” the file, creating a virtual disk drive visible in File Explorer, and often automatically opens that new drive to show you the contents. While convenient for installing software, this behavior is incredibly frustrating if you simply wanted to extract a single file from the ISO using a third-party archive tool (like 7-Zip or WinRAR), or if you accidentally double-clicked a massive image file that takes several seconds to mount and disrupts your workflow.
Changing the Default Association
To retain control over your archive files and stop Windows 11 from automatically mounting ISO files when double-clicked, you must change the default file association to a dedicated extraction utility.
You need a third-party archive program installed (like 7-Zip, which is free and open-source) to handle the ISO file instead of Windows Explorer. Locate any ISO file on your computer. Right-click the file, hover over Open with, and select Choose another app. A dialogue box will appear listing available programs. Scroll down the list and select your archive utility (e.g., 7-Zip File Manager). Before you click OK, ensure you check the box at the bottom of the window that says Always use this app to open .iso files. Click OK. From now on, double-clicking an ISO will simply open it within your archive tool, allowing you to view or extract specific files without mounting a virtual drive to your system.
