The Necessary Shield
Pop-up windows are historically one of the most annoying aspects of browsing the web, often used for aggressive advertising or malicious phishing attempts. By default, Google Chrome acts as a shield, automatically blocking pop-ups from opening. When a site attempts to launch a pop-up, Chrome intercepts it and displays a small icon in the address bar (a window with a red ‘X’). While this is generally beneficial, it causes major problems when you are using legitimate web applications—like a banking portal trying to open a PDF statement in a new window, or an enterprise software tool attempting to launch a login dialogue box.
Managing Pop-up Exceptions
To ensure legitimate applications function correctly and stop Google Chrome from automatically blocking necessary pop-ups, you must add specific websites to the browser’s exception list.
You should rarely disable the pop-up blocker globally; it is much safer to allow them on a per-site basis. When you are on a website that is failing to load a required window, look at the right side of the main address bar. You will see the Pop-up blocked icon (a small window with a red ‘X’). Click this icon. A menu will appear showing the specific link that was blocked. Select the radio button labelled Always allow pop-ups and redirects from [Website Name], then click the blue Done button. Refresh the page. Chrome will now permanently remember this exception and allow all future pop-ups generated by that specific domain, while keeping the shield active for the rest of the internet.
