The Overzealous Autofill
Google Chrome includes a comprehensive Autofill system designed to make online shopping faster. If you purchase an item on a website and enter your credit card details, Chrome will often prompt you to save that information. However, on some devices (especially those synced tightly with Google Pay), Chrome might automatically attempt to fill in your payment methods the moment you click on a checkout form, without explicitly asking for permission first. If you share a family computer or occasionally let a colleague use your laptop to order lunch, this automatic population of your sensitive financial data is a massive security oversight.
Securing Your Wallet
To protect your financial information and stop Google Chrome from automatically filling in your credit card details or payment methods on checkout forms, you must disable the specific payment autofill toggle.
Click the three vertical dots in the extreme top-right corner of the Chrome browser window and select Settings. In the left-hand navigation sidebar, click on Autofill and passwords. In the main right-hand panel, click on the section labelled Payment methods. You will see a list of any cards you have previously saved. Look at the very top of this page for a toggle switch labelled Save and fill payment methods. Click this toggle switch to turn it Off (it will turn grey). From this point forward, even if Chrome remembers your card in the background, it will never automatically insert the numbers into a form; you will have to type them manually.
