The Snap Assist Overreach
Windows 11 heavily promotes its multitasking capabilities, specifically a feature called “Snap Assist.” If you click and drag a window near the edge or corner of your screen, Windows assumes you want to tile it and automatically resizes the window to fill exactly half or a quarter of your display. While incredibly useful for working on two documents side-by-side, it can be infuriating if you are simply trying to move a video player slightly off-screen or arrange a chaotic desktop of small utility windows, only to have them violently expand the moment you get too close to the monitor’s bezel.
Disabling Automatic Resizing
To retain complete manual control over your window dimensions and stop Windows 11 from automatically resizing windows when you drag them to the edge of the screen, you must disable Snap Assist in the system settings.
Press the Windows Key, type Settings, and hit Enter. In the left-hand navigation sidebar, ensure you are on the System tab. In the main right-hand panel, click on Multitasking. At the very top of this page, you will see a master toggle switch labelled Snap windows (which handles automatic resizing and arrangement). Click this toggle to turn it completely Off. All the sub-options below it will grey out. You can now freely click, drag, and push windows partially off the edge of your screen, and they will never automatically snap or change their shape again.
