How to Stop Windows 11 from Automatically Emptying the Recycle Bin

The Missing Files

Windows 11 includes a feature called Storage Sense, designed to keep your hard drive clean by automatically deleting temporary files and old system logs. However, Storage Sense also assumes responsibility for your Recycle Bin. By default, it is often configured to permanently delete any file that has been sitting in the Recycle Bin for more than 30 days. While this reclaims disk space, the Recycle Bin is often used as a long-term “safety net” by users who might accidentally delete a file and not realize they need it until months later. Having Windows quietly empty this safety net in the background can lead to permanent, catastrophic data loss.

Protecting the Recycle Bin

To ensure your deleted files remain recoverable indefinitely and stop Windows 11 from automatically emptying the Recycle Bin, you must configure the specific rules within the Storage Sense settings.

Press the Windows Key and click the gear icon to open the Settings application. In the left-hand navigation pane, select System. On the right side, scroll down and click on Storage. Under the “Storage management” section, locate the Storage Sense option. Do not just turn the main toggle off; click the actual Storage Sense header or the arrow next to it to open the advanced configuration page. Look for the dropdown menu explicitly labelled Delete files in my recycle bin if they have been there for over:. Click this dropdown and select Never. You can leave the rest of Storage Sense turned on if you wish (to clean up temporary app files), but your Recycle Bin is now completely protected and will only empty when you manually right-click it and choose “Empty Recycle Bin.”
