The Shifting Grid
Many users treat their Windows 11 desktop as a physical desk, placing specific shortcuts in specific locations—games in one corner, work documents in another. However, this meticulously organized layout can be instantly destroyed if the “Auto arrange” feature is enabled. If you accidentally delete a file, change your screen resolution to play an older video game, or connect an external monitor, Windows 11 might panic and automatically snap all your desktop icons back into a rigid, sequential grid starting from the top-left corner, completely ruining your custom organization.
Locking Your Layout
To retain absolute control over your shortcut placement and stop Windows 11 from automatically rearranging your desktop icons, you must disable the auto-arrange grid setting directly from the desktop context menu.
Close or minimize all open application windows so you have a clear view of your desktop wallpaper. Right-click anywhere on the empty desktop space. A context menu will appear. Hover your mouse cursor over the View option at the very top of the menu to reveal a secondary flyout menu. Look closely at the options presented. If there is a checkmark next to Auto arrange icons, click it to remove the checkmark. (It is generally recommended to leave “Align icons to grid” checked so they snap neatly into rows, but “Auto arrange” must be off). Once unchecked, you can freely drag your icons anywhere on the screen, and Windows will respect their coordinates permanently, even across resolution changes.
