The Unwanted Definitions
Google Docs includes a built-in Dictionary tool, designed to help users quickly find definitions and synonyms without leaving the writing environment. While useful, it is tied to a keyboard shortcut (`Ctrl+Shift+Y` on Windows/ChromeOS, or `Cmd+Shift+Y` on macOS). If you are a fast typist who frequently uses complex formatting shortcuts, or if you accidentally drag your palm across the keyboard, you can easily trigger this shortcut. Instantly, a large Dictionary panel slides out from the right side of your screen, shrinking your document canvas and completely breaking your concentration while you scramble to close it.
Banishing the Dictionary Panel
To prevent this jarring interruption and effectively disable the Dictionary panel from appearing in Google Docs, you must either remap your muscle memory or intercept the shortcut at the browser level.
Unfortunately, Google Docs does not have a native setting to “turn off” the Dictionary feature or change its default keyboard shortcut. If the panel is currently open, you must manually click the small X in the top right corner of the sidebar to close it. If you find yourself constantly triggering `Ctrl+Shift+Y` by accident, the most effective permanent solution is to use a browser extension to intercept the keystroke before Google Docs registers it. Install an extension like Shortkeys (Custom Keyboard Shortcuts) for Chrome. Create a new rule targeting the specific URL `docs.google.com`. Set the trigger to `ctrl+shift+y` (or your Mac equivalent) and set the action to “Do nothing” or “Run JavaScript” with a blank script. This effectively neutralizes the shortcut, ensuring the Dictionary panel never opens again.
