How to Stop Windows 11 from Automatically Rotating Your Screen

The Dizzying Flip

Windows 11 is highly optimized for 2-in-1 convertible laptops and tablets. To support these form factors, it utilizes built-in gyroscopes and accelerometers to determine the physical orientation of your device. If you tilt your laptop slightly to the side while lying on the couch, or if you bump the screen of your tablet, Windows automatically assumes you have rotated the device and instantly flips the entire desktop layout into portrait mode. This automatic rotation is often highly sensitive, leading to frustrating moments where you must frantically shake and tilt your laptop to force the screen back to its proper landscape orientation.

Locking the Display Orientation

To ensure your desktop always remains exactly as you expect it and stop Windows 11 from automatically rotating the screen based on physical movement, you must lock the display orientation within the system settings.

Press the Windows Key and click the gear icon to open the Settings app. In the left-hand navigation pane, ensure you are on the System tab. In the main window, click on Display. Scroll down this page until you find the section titled “Scale & layout.” Look for the specific setting labelled Rotation lock. (Note: If you are using a standard desktop computer without a gyroscope, this option will not be visible). You will see a toggle switch to the right of this setting. Click the toggle to turn Rotation lock On. By turning this “lock” on, you are actively disabling the automatic rotation feature. Your screen is now permanently locked into its current orientation and will completely ignore any physical tilting of the device.
