How to Disable the Document Translation Feature in Google Docs

The Unwanted Language Prompt

Google Docs integrates heavily with Google Translate. Whenever you open a document that contains a significant amount of text in a language different from your Google account’s default setting, the software automatically detects the foreign language and drops a persistent banner across the top of the screen asking if you would like to translate the document. While helpful for casual reading, this feature is incredibly annoying for bilingual users, language students, or developers who frequently work with mixed-language documents or code snippets, as the translation banner constantly interrupts the editing interface and takes up valuable screen real estate.

Silencing the Translation Engine

To stop Google Docs from constantly scanning your text for foreign languages and prompting you with translation banners, you must disable the automatic translation feature within the Google Account language settings.

The translation setting is not controlled within Google Docs itself; it is a global account preference. Open a new tab in your browser and navigate to myaccount.google.com. On the left-hand sidebar, click on Personal info. Scroll down the page until you find the “General preferences for the web” section, and click on Language. Look for the toggle switch labelled Offer to translate pages that aren’t in a language you read. Click this toggle to turn it completely Off. The change applies instantly across all Google services. When you return to Google Docs and refresh your foreign-language document, the translation engine will remain silent, and the intrusive banner will never appear again.
