The Hidden Recording Overhead
Windows 11 includes a built-in feature known as Game DVR, which is part of the broader Xbox Game Bar ecosystem. This feature is designed to continuously record your screen in the background while you play games, ensuring you can instantly save a video clip of something unexpected that just happened. However, this constant background video encoding consumes significant CPU and GPU resources, which can severely reduce framerates and cause noticeable stuttering on lower-end hardware, even if you never intend to use the recording feature.
Disabling the DVR Engine via Registry
While you can turn off the basic Game Bar toggles in the Windows Settings app, the most comprehensive way to completely disable the underlying Game DVR recording engine is through the Windows Registry. Press the Windows Key + R, type regedit, and press Enter to launch the Registry Editor. Navigate to the following path: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\System\GameConfigStore.
In the right-hand pane, look for the DWORD value named GameDVR_Enabled. Double-click it and change the Value data from 1 to 0. Next, navigate to a second location: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows. Right-click the Windows folder, select New, then Key, and name it GameDVR. Select this new key, right-click the empty space on the right, select New, then DWORD (32-bit) Value, and name it AllowGameDVR. Ensure its Value data is also set to 0. Close the registry and restart your PC. The background recording engine will be entirely disabled at the system level.
