Windows 10 features a granular privacy system designed to govern how Universal Windows Platform (UWP) apps interact with your personal files. Among these settings is the “Let apps access my videos library” toggle. Unlike the general file system access permission, this setting specifically targets the default Videos folder within your user directory. When enabled, it grants permitted Microsoft Store applications the ability to quietly read, scan, modify, and potentially upload video files stored in that directory without triggering a per-file user prompt.
While a dedicated video player, an automated video editor, or a media server application genuinely needs unobstructed access to your Videos library to function, many other applications do not. A game, a calculator, or a generic messaging client has no legitimate reason to index your personal home videos. If this broad permission is left enabled indiscriminately, a malicious or poorly coded app could scan your video library in the background, compromising your privacy. To enforce the principle of least privilege, you should disable this sweeping access and force applications to request video files one by one via the standard Windows file picker when they actually need them.
How to Block Access to Your Videos Library
You can instantly revoke access to your Videos folder for all Microsoft Store applications via the Windows Privacy settings.
- Click the Start button and select the Settings gear icon (or press
Win + I). - Click on the Privacy category.
- Look at the left-hand sidebar, scroll down to the “App permissions” section, and click on Videos.
- In the right-hand pane, look for the text Allow apps to access your videos library.
- Immediately underneath this text, you will find a master toggle switch. Click the toggle switch to turn it Off.
Once disabled, Windows will block all UWP apps from arbitrarily scanning your Videos folder. If an app legitimately needs to load a video, you will have to manually open it using the standard “File Open” dialog box, ensuring your personal media remains completely private.
