How to Disable the Windows 10 ‘Let apps control call history’ Option

The Silent Call Log Access

In an effort to unify the experience between PCs and mobile devices, Windows 10 introduced a suite of telephony-related features. If you link your smartphone to your PC (using the Phone Link app or similar software), Windows can route your calls, text messages, and contact lists directly to your desktop. As part of this integration, Windows allows Universal Windows Platform (UWP) apps from the Microsoft Store to interact with your phone data. One of the master privacy settings governing this interaction is “Let apps control call history.”

When this master toggle is left on, any authorized application can silently read the log of your incoming and outgoing phone calls, extract the phone numbers you’ve interacted with, and potentially even delete entries from your history without explicitly prompting you for every action. While this level of access is necessary for a dedicated dialer app or a comprehensive CRM tool that logs client communications, it is a massive privacy risk if granted to a generic game, a calculator, or a social media application. Your call history reveals a detailed map of your personal and professional relationships. To ensure that random Store apps cannot silently scrape your telephony logs, you should disable this system-wide setting.

How to Block Call History Access

You can instantly prevent all Microsoft Store applications from reading or modifying your phone logs via the Privacy settings.

  1. Click the Start button and select the Settings gear icon (or press Win + I).
  2. Click on the Privacy category.
  3. Look at the left-hand sidebar, scroll down to the “App permissions” section, and click on Call history.
  4. In the right-hand pane, locate the master toggle switch situated immediately underneath the text Let apps access my call history.
  5. Click the toggle switch to turn it Off.

Once disabled, Windows will block all UWP apps from interacting with your call logs, protecting your communication metadata from unnecessary exposure. (Note: You can alternatively leave the master toggle ‘On’ and scroll down to manually revoke call history access for specific, individual apps).
