The Overactive Formatting Engine
Google Docs is designed to anticipate what you are trying to write and format it automatically. One of its most aggressive features is the automatic list generator. If you type the number “1.” (or a letter like “A.”) followed by a space, Docs immediately assumes you are starting a structured outline. It automatically indents the text, changes the formatting to a numbered list, and prepares to automatically generate “2.” as soon as you hit the Enter key.
While this is helpful if you are actually writing a list, it is incredibly annoying if you are simply starting a sentence with a number. For example, if you are writing a legal document and type “1. The plaintiff claims…”, you might want that sentence to remain flush with the left margin as standard text. Instead, Docs forces an indentation and completely ruins your paragraph structure. If you prefer to manually control exactly when and where a numbered list begins, you must disable the auto-formatting engine.
How to Stop Automatic List Generation
You can prevent Google Docs from turning your numbered sentences into formatted lists via the Preferences menu.
- Open your document in Google Docs.
- Look at the top toolbar and click on the Tools menu.
- Scroll down the dropdown list and select Preferences.
- In the Preferences window, ensure you are on the General tab.
- Look down the list of checkboxes for the option labelled Automatically detect lists.
- Click the checkbox to remove the checkmark.
- Click the blue OK button to save your changes.
Google Docs will instantly stop analyzing your keystrokes for list patterns. When you type “1.” and press the spacebar, the text will remain exactly as you typed it, without any automatic indentation or formatting applied.
