The Distracting Form Prompts
Google Chrome features a powerful Autofill engine designed to save you time. When it detects that you are filling out a web form (like a shipping address or a checkout page), it analyzes the text fields. To help you fill it out faster, Chrome displays “Autofill predictions”—a drop-down list of suggested text, addresses, or names pulled directly from your browser history and saved Google Account data, predicting what you are about to type.
While this is incredibly useful for personal shopping, it can be a massive privacy risk and a severe visual distraction in professional settings. If you are sharing your screen during a presentation or recording a tutorial, clicking into a text box can accidentally expose your personal home address, phone number, or previous search terms via the prediction dropdown. Furthermore, if you are a web developer testing form validation, the constant pop-ups blocking the interface are infuriating. To ensure privacy and a clean interface, you must disable these visual predictions.
How to Turn Off Autofill Predictions
You can disable the visual suggestion dropdowns via the experimental flags menu.
- Open Google Chrome.
- Click inside the main address bar at the top of the browser.
- Type
chrome://flagsand press Enter. - A page titled “Experiments” will load.
- In the search bar at the top, type Show Autofill predictions.
- The specific flag will appear highlighted in yellow. Next to it is a dropdown menu.
- Change the dropdown menu setting from “Default” or “Enabled” to Disabled.
- Click the blue Relaunch button at the bottom of the screen.
Upon restarting, Chrome will stop aggressively parsing forms to present you with historical data dropdowns, keeping your screen clean and your personal information hidden when clicking into text fields.
