How to Disable the Windows 10 ‘Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop’ Option

The Text Legibility Effect

In Windows 10, when you place files or shortcuts directly on your desktop, their names appear underneath the icons. By default, Windows applies a “Drop shadow” effect to this text. This visual setting renders a dark, blurred shadow immediately behind the white letters of the icon labels. The primary purpose of this feature is to ensure the text remains legible regardless of what desktop wallpaper you are using. Without the shadow, white text would vanish entirely against a white or bright-colored background image.

However, if you intentionally use a dark, solid-color wallpaper (like deep gray or black) to reduce eye strain, the drop shadow becomes completely unnecessary. On very old PCs, rendering these soft shadows in real-time as you drag icons across the screen requires a tiny bit of graphics processing power. If you want a crisper, flatter, retro look for your desktop text, or if you are ruthlessly optimizing a slow machine and your wallpaper is dark enough to provide natural contrast, you can disable these shadows.

How to Turn Off Icon Drop Shadows

You can remove the shadows behind desktop text via the advanced system performance settings.

  1. Click the Start button and type Advanced system settings.
  2. Select View advanced system settings from the search results. This directly opens the System Properties window to the Advanced tab.
  3. Under the Performance section near the top, click the Settings… button.
  4. A new “Performance Options” window will open. Ensure you are on the Visual Effects tab.
  5. Scroll through the list of visual effects and locate the checkbox labelled Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop.
  6. Click the checkbox to remove the checkmark.
  7. Click Apply, and then click OK.

Your desktop icon labels will immediately lose their blurred background shadows, leaving crisp, flat text. (Note: If the text becomes hard to read, you will need to change your desktop background to a darker color.)
