The Backup Status Icon
Time Machine is the built-in backup utility for macOS, designed to automatically save hourly, daily, and weekly snapshots of your entire system to an external drive. To help you monitor these backups, macOS often places a Time Machine icon (a clock with a counter-clockwise arrow) directly in your menu bar (top right corner). This icon spins when a backup is in progress and allows you to quickly force a backup or enter the Time Machine interface.
However, once Time Machine is configured, it operates entirely silently in the background. It does not require daily supervision. If your backup drive is permanently attached (or you back up to a network NAS), the menu bar icon simply wastes valuable screen real estate. Most users only need to interact with Time Machine when they explicitly need to restore a lost file, which can easily be done via Spotlight or the System Settings. If you want a cleaner desktop, you should remove this redundant status icon.
How to Hide the Time Machine Icon
You can remove the Time Machine status indicator via your System Settings.
- Click the Apple Logo in the top-left corner of your screen and select System Settings… (or System Preferences).
- In the left-hand sidebar, click on Control Center.
- Scroll down through the right-hand pane until you find the Menu Bar Only section.
- Locate the entry for Time Machine.
- Next to Time Machine, you will see a dropdown menu.
- Click the dropdown menu and change it from “Show in Menu Bar” to Don’t Show in Menu Bar.
The Time Machine icon will immediately disappear from your menu bar. (Note: Your automatic backups will continue to run in the background exactly as scheduled; this only removes the visual indicator.)
